Power strips, surge protectors, and other devices are essential in many households today. There are many plug-in options for smartphones, tablets, streaming media devices, and gaming consoles. These are some ways you can keep your family and home safe
- For high-power items like space heaters, humidifiers, and other appliances with high power, do not use surge protectors or power strips. They can be plugged directly into a wall outlet.
- To increase the number of outlets, don’t connect power strips. You can however temporarily plug in an extension cord to a power strip.
- Consider hiring an electrician to add outlets to power strips and extension cords that are used in multiple places throughout your home. Because the wires inside your wall are more durable and safer, this is a permanent solution. My dad was adamant about not having multiple extension cords back when he was an electrician.
- Never use extension cords or power strips in the bathroom or on the counter-top of your kitchen.
- Do the math. Look at the specifications of the power strip to see what it can handle. Watts is the most important number. The higher the number is, the better. Add the watts consumed by the devices that you are plugging in. The total wattage on the package should not be exceeded. Also, consider the suppressed voltage rating when buying surge protectors. A lower rating will offer better protection against surges. Talk to someone in the store if you are like me and don’t like math.
- Look beyond the price. You need to ensure that you are buying the right one for your family and that it is certified.
- Do not cover cords with a rug to avoid trip and fall hazards. Repetitive stepping on them can lead to their breaking down, which could cause a fire.

- Because they have multiple outlets, surge protectors are great. You should not use every surge protector, however, because it all depends on the device you are plugging into. The majority of the things we plugin, such as our phones, computers, and gaming consoles, don’t require much power. Items in your kitchen, such as a skillet, crockpot, or toaster would draw more power, which could cause problems.
